Bertoia, Harry

Sculptor and furniture designer who was born in Italy, Bertoia emigrated to U.S. in 1930, and became a citizen in 1947. He studied at Cranbrook Academy 1937-1940 and became a teacher there. He produced molded plywood products for the war effort for Evans Products Company in Venice, Calif. in 1943, where he also designed chairs with Charles Eames and took a position with him in 1949. In 1950 he established his own studio in Pennsylvania, and became an independent designer in 1952 for Knoll Associates, for whom he designed his famous wireform Bertoia Chairs. After 1953, he devoted himself almost exclusively to sculpture.
